Nan Zhen Seafood

6 Jalan Bukit Merah #01-37, ABC Brickworks Food Ctr (Map) 5.30pm – 12am Wed

In this densely laid out hawker stall that even has an overhead storage shelf in the middle of the kitchen, over 70 dishes are offered. They hawk all the local family favourites like black bean sauce fish head, cereal prawns, ha cheong kai (prawn paste chicken), etc. But there are a few standout stunners. Their claypot liver seems to be on every customer's table. They will do a tableside gig of tossing the hot seared liver in the claypot as they approach you. The liver is soft and has a springy bite to it. The ginger and scallions give it a classic old-school taste. The sweet and sour pork ribs is one of the best we had in a hawker stall – crispy yet soft inside and the sauce was not overly vinegared or tangy. They also offer the almost forgotten tua tao clams done in an eggy taucheo sauce, a joy to devour over your soft rice. Another standout item is the clams beehoon, which takes the flavours of the shellfish so coherently. They also have the popular ter ka beehoon or trotter noodle. By and large, they specialise in old-school Hokkien stir fries.
