These old folks have contemplated retirement many times as they have been in the business for over 60 years, peddling the iconic Mee Pok Tah or fish ball noodle at the famous now defunct Orchard Road Carpark or Gluttons Square back in the day. The star is of course the fish balls – big, crunchy and bouncy with a rich flavour of the fish used. No flour is added to the mix and the fishballs go so well with the simple mee pok noodles and the Teochew style of sambal chilli. Also, not to be missed is their her kiow, a minced meat dumpling with smoked sole fish bones or tee po wrapped in a skin, made entirely from mashed fish paste. They sell out very quickly and go early if you want the old school sensation from these septuagenarians.

There’s always a queue for their food and if you consider that they use a bunch of store bought or supplied ingredients, like fish balls and fish cakes, one will wonder why. But when you tear in, you will realise it’s about the art of blanching the noodles and the all -important sambal. Theirs come a tad roastier and it is like a cross between sambal and XO sauce. The basic Mee Pok Tah or Bak Chor Mee is in its element, nothing fancy, just very comforting.
