Fei Fei Roasted Noodle Blk 254 Jurong East St 24 #01-28, Yuhua Village Mkt & Food Ctr (Map) 8.30am – 11.55am Sun & Mon
One bite into their noodle and you'll know what Cantonese folks mean by "song hao" or delightful in the mouth. It has a crunchy and thin al dente goodness about it and the sauce is made with roast cha siu drippings with hints of sesame oil. The roasted cha siu is the main act – it comes brown (not the usual fake red) with burnt edges and a well-caramelised marinade. There's always a line and their operating hours are short; they often sell out well before their official closing hour. If you go early, like at 8.30 am, and get in line before they open, add their smoky and juicy roast duck to the equation and you'll realise just how sensational this meal can be.
Hoy Yong Seafood
Restaurant
352 Clementi Ave 2 #01-153 (Map) Mon – Sat: 5.30pm – 10.30pm
Chef Hoy Yong is one colourful figure- hangs a huge good luck charm medallion around his neck, very talkative and is extremely proud of what he has learned over the decades from Chinese masters including the Four Heavenly Kings and other top kitchens since the last century. He has reasons to be. You will see his icons on almost every family or group dinner like the legendary Duck Roll Tempura- duck fillet wrapped with seafood, pork mince, and vegetables, steamed, cooled then fried with an incredible tempura batter. Do not miss his restaurant class Prawn in Bean Skin Roll (a joy to crunch it down), Nonya Assam Fish Head (extremely fresh and richly spicy yet tangy), the superb Wat Tan Hor Fun (egg drop fried hor fun), his Yam Ring, made with mashed yam and fried into shape and stuffed with seafood and greens is one of the best around. His Nam Yu Pork, marinated with preserved red yam, is very comforting as is old fashioned dishes like fried large
