Sure, old name Teochew restaurants like this are known for their steamed fishes, especially the pomfret, garoupa and threadfin (done with a miso or taucheo paste), and this is no exception – it comes fresh and very bold, steamed in a clear tangy stock. But the main little stars here are the humble items like the chai po kway teow done in both crispy and stir-fried versions. We adore the latter – soft, well seared and smooth kway teow done with simple chopped long beans, chai po, dried shrimps, chives and kailan greens. It is a symphony of flavours and textures. The braised duck is outstanding in both taste and presentation; the braise is bold and saltier (to go with rice) and they stack the slices of duck over a mount of tofu… a delight to see and tear into. Their ngoh hiang roll, both pork and liver renditions, is another item not to be missed. Their orh nee or yam paste is one of the best in our little red dot of a city.
