Boss Steven Lee is already heading into his 70s but is still pushing on. His daughter has now decided to help take over operations and he can breathe a little easier. The reason – all their yong tau foo or stuffed tofu items are hand-made, with a fish paste that they make themselves. Only 7 items are on offer, and you do not have a choice. You get fish balls, big and small dried tofu puffs, bean skin, tofu, chillies and bitter gourds. It comes boiled in a fish stock and you dunk it in their chilli sauce or have them plain. Their other very popular (almost everyone has it as a side order) is the steamed threadfin tail and stir-fried abacus seeds or yam gnocchi. This quaint little eatery sits no more than 50 and has an old-world charm all on its own. If you’ve never had Yong Tau Foo, well, this is the gold standard in Singapore. A second generation is now helping out and they've introduced "bespoked" items like baked portobello mushrooms smeared with fish paste atop.
