Selera Kampung Blk 17 Upper Boon Keng Rd #01-22, Upper Boon Keng Food Ctr (Map) 4.30pm – 9pm Wed
They hail from the old Newton hawker centre and they have a school of Muslim regulars that swear by this old-fashioned style of satay. The cooks make them by hand in a little central kitchen and it tastes nothing like the familiar supplied satays we get at many stalls. The meats, like chicken, beef and mutton come soft and when grilled, it lends a roasty exterior to the soft meat. They also offer babat (tripe), hati (liver) and a rare and lovable chicken skin satay (sinfully soft and roasty). The star item here, and we seldom note these, is the peanut sauce. It is one of the spiciest versions we’ve had in Singapore. It is not tourist friendly as “a lot of the old customers wants s to up the chilli impact.”. When you dip their sweetish satay into the spicy peanut sauce, it harks back to the era of satay in the 70s. Go in the evenings and also enjoy the slow rock music which will set the tone for your meal.
