Haron Satay
1220 East Coast Parkway #01-55, East Coast Lagoon Food Village (Map) 3pm – 8pm Mon
This street hawker satay brand was established in the 80s and it remains as one of the nation's favourite Muslim satay. The marinade for their soft, juicy and roasty skewers of chicken, mutton and beef satay comes very bold and smokey with a sweetness (that is not cloying). The rich rempah spiciness is redolent of vintage local satay spices like lemongrass, blue ginger, chilli, shallots, traces of cinnamon, etc. They grill this out front and centre of the stall over a charcoal fired grill, and it makes for great social media friendly images. That's how it was decades ago on the streets and it is what it is here.
Kwong Satay 517 Geylang Lor 27A (Map) Mon – Fri: 5pm – 10.30pm, Sat & Sun: 4.30pm – 10.30pm
The boss here used to work for Kwong himself till he went on semi-retirement and into a cottage food supply business. He now gets his supply from his ex-boss and partner, and this is easily one of the best satay (especially the pork belly version) in Singapore. The fatty pork satay comes huge, thick, and beckoning and when you dip it in the pineapple laced peanut sauce… the skies open up and sing for you. The sweet, spicy and savoury accent will get you and the hint of blue ginger in the marinade is blissful. Order the limited bely pork version and you will be sated, bu the usual version is also a people pleaser too. You must be patient, as they grill one or two orders at a time in their little grill behind and it’s a popular stall. Order that cold drink or beer, and down it with their satays.
