The Nonya or Peranakans are famed for this- a herbed rice meal with prawns or baked and flaked fish. Up to a dozen aromatics, herbs and leaves like laksa, kaffir lime, pepper leaves, lemongrass, long and french beans etc are finely chopped (less than a millimetre thin each) and folded into the flavoured rice with the flaked fish or prawns. It is very aromatic and some sambal concludes the equation.

Chendol Melaka

15 Upper East Coast Road Soy Eu Tua kopitiam (Map) 9am – 5pm Mon

Nonya Daisy and her husband Colin runs this little stall, which was a collaboration with the late Datuk Kenny Chan of Malacca, a culinary treasure from Malaysia. They place over 10 raw herbs and spices, hand chopped and blended, into to the rice and tossed it with a special rempah. The result, a magnificent little plate of aromatic herbed rice, eaten simply with dollop of their own made and very spicy sambal. They don't make alot of it each say as Colin mans the stall alone on most days. Just go early, tear into it and finish it off with a bowl of thier signature Chendol, make with gula melaka from, of course, Malacca.
