Ye Lai Xiang Laksa
4 Marsiling St 12 #01-73, Marsiling Mall Hawker Ctr (Map) 7.30am – 3pm Thu
This is a good spot for an early morning laksa fix. The blended spices of the laksa rempah is visible when you stir in, so you can tell it is not store bought and have a distinct flavour of their own. It is topped with cockles and egg. The dollop of roasty sambal takes it to another dimension. This is an aficionado's version, which isn’t about the topping but the laksa curry which says “Chinese style” in style, not quite N onya, and it is light on coconut milk and intense with dried hae bi (shrimps) in the rempah.

The second they open, a patient queue forms, and it moves fast. Their laksa broth is made ahead and rested to enhance the flavour. It is different from local style laksa. This Sarawak laksa version has a complex rempah base that leans more towards a curry base with ingredients like cardamom, nutmeg and cumin, and the usual sambal base spices. It comes very smooth and is distinctly d ifferent from the Katong style. Thin beehoon is used and don’t expect to find cockles in there. The crunch coming from the sprouts is a delight to the bite. Two mid-sized prawns, freshly blanched, sit atop and you'll wolf this down in under 5, trust us.
