Baba Frederic Lam is a true-blue Peranakan. On weekdays, he conducts cooking classes and talks about their culture at various clubs and even to private guests at home. On the weekend, his family transforms this charming own-decorated little one table eatery (with a few more outside for al fresco dining by the walkway) into a little Nonya food temple. The queues are a fixture. You just point to whatever he cooks that weekend in that food shelf warmer, and it comes to you with rice of course. Never miss his Babi Buah Keluak (like how it was originally), very rich and redolent with the black nut and a coherent rempah, and those pork chunks give it bite as you chow down with the rice. Even the humble sambal egg is respectfully done with spiced ikan bilis and onions. Their own-made otah is so thick, soft, smooth and intensely flavourful with a bold amount of spices. It makes you realise what you have been missing. Do not pass up on their Assam Fish, so tangy, sharp and spicy, and with a bold rempah blended in. His desserts, like his menu, has little changes and surprises every 3 weeks or so, but when it's available, do not skip the grainy sago gula Melaka. Try it and you'll know what we mean.
