No Name Hainanese Curry Rice

Blk 40 Beo Crescent #01-10, Ho Ping Hng Coffeeshop (Map) 5.30am – 3pm

Wed ( Temporarily closed)

This is one of the most famous names in curry rice that has no name. The dark and dingy coffeeshop stall is designed such that you eat and go, not hang around. But they all do just that because the items are moreish and alluring. The thin fried pork chop has a little layer of fat and attracts the aficionados who love to pair it with the sweet sauce cha siew, soy sauce egg, stewed cabbage and curry chicken. They also combine it with Chinese economy rice lovables like fried fish, tempura prawns, soy stewed taupok (puff tofu) and minced meat cakes. The daily queues are long but fast and this local spot tells you a little story about the Singapore food story.

Public Chicken Curry Rice 36 Telok Blangah Rise #01-32 Telok Blangah Rise Mkt (Map) 4.30am – 9am Tue

The initial feel is that the items are not heavy-duty curry meal stuff but a combination of a balance between economy and curry rice dishes. The stall offers an old forgotten classic – stir-fried prawns with cucumber in light curry. There's just one type of curry but when you spoon some of the thick soy braise sauce from the stewed fatty pork over the curry, this rice meal is as comforting as it comes. The pork is chunky and thick, and the triple layers of skin, fat and soft belly pork is arresting. About 15 to 18 items are offered (depending on what time you go), but we suggest you order the luscious curry chicken and slosh it over the rice to dive deeper into this Hainanese curry rice land. Queues appear from 5am here.
