They are the ultimate insomniacs’ coffee stall – it opens at 3am and shutters by 10am, when you are ready for your late morning cuppa. The local style coffee uses robusta, like they all do here, and it's very bold and done freshly using the good old Hainanese coffee socks method. Nary is there any hint of bitterness caused by overly high heat used while brewing. The use of condensed and evaporated milk adds such a smooth, buttery-like sensation to each sip. The older uncle kopi master brews it swiftly, almost tik-tok app dance like especially when he's fatigued, to relieve stress. If you go early, order a stick of you tiao and dip it in the brew for a truly local style breakfast snack.

They used to occupy the iconic triangular corner unit in the charming row of pre-war shophouses along this street and they served up a legend – damn good local coffee (the family traded in coffee powder for decades) and a comforting plate of thin roasted bread kaya sandwich. The coffee is a must order as is their Ceylonese tea and the star breakfast or snack sandwich is the French Kaya Toast – a whole slice is dipped in egg and grilled, served with a dollop of their addictive own-made kaya with slices of cold salted butter, just melting on top of the hot eggy toast. The New York Times and The Washington Post even gushed about their “boffee” – local coffee with a slice of butter floating and melting atop. They have now moved here, a few doors down from their old Singapore “Flatiron” little building along the same street.
